We are husband and wife, parents to Anna Katerina, and entrepreneurs based in Sugar Land, TX. We have a passion for living a purposeful life and are driven by a strong commitment to health, sustainability, and social justice.
On May 11, 2008, our family pledged to a year of eating only locally grown food. Every ingredient in every meal had to come from no more than 100 miles from our home. Since then, we have come to understand more about local food production and sustainability, our power as “enlightened” consumers, and the role we share in challenging an industrial food system that is threatening human health, damaging the environment and undermining global food security. We had been reading a lot of material on our industrial food system and were struck by its very unsustainable nature. From industrial farms to concentrated animal feedlot operations (CAFOs), the realities of food production came across as bleak, inhumane and self-destructive.
We also learned of a study in Iowa that tracked the average “food miles” (distance traveled from farm to plate) of certain produce items and were astonished at the result: 1,500 miles! Add to that packaging, processing and refrigeration, and one can begin to get a glimpse of the enormous environmental impact we exert simply by participating in a centralized food system.
The convergence of all this information made us question our own role in the food system, which would eventually lead to our decision to become locavores. It is said that we are co-creators of our agricultural system, a direct and powerful statement that forces us to be accountable for our food choices, especially when the agricultural system is not aligned with our personal values. That is where we found ourselves when we committed to eating only local, sustainable food.
Our goal is to shrink our ecological footprint and open a dialog about the impact that our food system has on the environment. We are documenting our experiences on 100MileHarvest.com and creating a set of resources that includes a nationwide local food directory and local food social network.
Join us in our journey of growth and transformation.
